August Goals

August 3, 2012

YAY!!!! It’s FINALLY Friday!!! Haha I actually lucked out and don’t really have to work today – someone in my office owns a sailboat and invited the interns to go sailing for the afternoon! I’m basically thrilled. I used to sail every summer at camp growing up, for 8 years, and a taught it when I was a counselor. I also have been lucky enough to go  on 3 week-long sailing trips.

But guess what? I haven’t sailed in 6 years. SIX YEARS. It’s hard to describe how painful that is for me. Sailing is something that is a part of me, there’s no where in the world that I’m happier than on a sailboat. I miss it sooooo much! Haha I’m knocking on wood right now so I don’t jinx our trip this afternoon!

Okay, okay, enough about sailing! As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I need to do my Goals! A recap from last month (to see how I did) and new goals for August!

Here’s how July went:

July Goal Recap

1) Be more social. I think I did a pretty good job on this one! I had brunch with several friends throughout the month, hosted a blogger froyo meet up, hung out with Chelsey a few times, went to the Chobani dinner at Boka, went to spin with Sierra, and a few other dinners and meet-ups here and there. Doesn’t sound like much, but it was definitely an improvement over June!

2) HAVE FUN at the Chicago Rock N Roll Half Marathon! YES! I’m not going to lie, it was HARD and I certainly wouldn’t call those last couple of miles “fun” but I trusted the training program, I didn’t worry too much about it, and I really did enjoy the race (haha, the first 8 miles at least).

3) READ MORE BOOKS! BOOYAH. Another goal fully accomplished! As you all saw from mybook reviews, I read several books this month: Anthem by Ann Rand, Wild by Cheryl Strayed, Insurgent by Veronica Roth, and Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann Brashares. That’s a book a week!

4) Be better about keeping my apartment clean. Ehhh. I did alright with this one. I was fairly good about keeping things clean, better than before. However the weekend I spent with my brother’s dog, Molly (the same as the Rock N Roll Half) I wasn’t home at all so it turned into a mess for the week after that. Otherwise, I did alright on this one. Haha no, “booyah” though.

August Goals:

1) Keep up training while traveling. August is a crazy month for me. I have my last week and a half of my internship, then I fly to KC, drive to Colorado Springs, fly to Boston for the Healthy Living Summit, fly back to Chicago, and then a week later start my last year of law school. Somewhere in there I also have to train for a marathon and keep up strength training so I don’t get injured! So my goal is to keep to my training plan as best I can (my biggest issue is a 16 miler the weekend of HLS…) but don’t freak out if I miss a shorter run!

2) Have fun at Healthy Living Summit! You may have noticed, but I tend to be a worry wart, I get anxious really easily! My way of dealing with this? Not thinking about it. My goal for HLS is to not worry that I’ll have trouble with the food served (due to my intolerances), or that I won’t make some friends, or that I’ll feel super awkward, or that I won’t have cute outfits, or that I’ll die during the workout session and embarrass myself, or blah blah blah BLAH. I need to tell my brain to chill out and just have fun!

3) Keep in touch with friends. I had a similar goal a month or two ago about calling people. I need to bring this back! I have a friend who I’ve known since I was at least 2 and I realized when I talked to her on gchat the other day that I hadn’t spoken to her since May. MAY. That’s insane. I also want to be sure to see as many friends and family members as I can while I’m home. Seeing as I’ll be there for 2 full days, this might be quite a task. But I’m up for it!

Do you worry a lot, or are you more go with the flow?

Are you really social, or more of a home body/”me time” person?

Sounds like you have a super awesome month ahead! Take what life throws at you and enjoy every second.

I myself worry about silly things but not the bigger things…maybe a problem? But I love being social and busy. I can’t be in my apartment alone for more than a few hours. I get lonely and anxious. Not cute at all! Although I do occasionally just need a “me” night.

    Enjoy sailing!

Haha we’re definitely opposites, I love hanging out by myself, although not too much, then I start to go crazy! Haha my poor brother, when I see him I can’t stop talking!

I’m an anxious person too, so I worry a lot. I’m trying to work on it, but it’s hard!

I am an anxious person to but I have found yoga to help calm down my nerves! Have fun at HLS and sailing :). I am a homebody by far and I need to be more social

Haha I love your last goal 🙂 Looks like August will be exciting!

Sounds like you’ve had an excellent July! Hope that you enjoy the HLS, I wish I was going!

I definitely tend to be a worrier–though in some cases I do just “go with the flow.” I guess it depends on the situation! And I am definitely NOT a “social butterfly.” I would much rather spend time with a few close friends or family members than socialize at parties with a huge group of people. I just tend to be very shy and reserved–though I open up more once I get to know people:) And I have been meaning to read the book Divergent; do you recommend it? I hope you have a great Friday!

    • August 3, 2012 9:28 am

I’m definitely pretty shy and reserved (haha although that might not come across on this blog!). and YES I recommend Divergent and the next book in the series, Insurgent. If you go to my review page I have a review of Divergent and then I wrote one for Insurgent last… Friday I think? Haven’t added it to the review page I don’t think.

Sounds like you’ve had an excellent July! Hope that you enjoy the HLS, I wish I was going!

  9. August 3, 2012 8:51 am

Good August goals! I’m a worrywart too. I tend to go through social or not-so-social spurts so it depends. I’m def an introvert at heart though

  10. August 3, 2012 9:31 am

Wow! I can’t believe you read that many books in a month. They must have been awesome. I need to see if those are at my local library because I have tried to read two different books in the last few weeks and can’t get into them 😦

  11. August 3, 2012 9:44 am

Good job on your goals! I’m definitely stealing the keep the apartment clean one for August 🙂 Have fun today!

  12. August 3, 2012 9:48 am

Holy smokes, four books in a month! Look at you go! That’s awesome 🙂 I normally clean my apartment on Saturdays, but since I was so busy last Saturday I didn’t get around to it, and now it’s gross. I’m actually absurdly excited to clean it tomorrow haha. I’m DEFINITELY a worrier, which is why I tend to not be social unless prompted, if that makes sense. It’s not very often that I’ll initiate things, but if someone invites me to do something, I’m all for it. I’m a much happier person when I’m social.

  13. August 3, 2012 11:18 am

Sounds like you did a great job with your goals and have some awesome ones lined up! I need to work on being more social and going with the flow too. Sometimes its hard to let go!

  14. August 3, 2012 11:29 am

I’m not much of a worrier, I don’t like stressing about things that I can’t control!

You did so good with your goals 😀 ! To be more social should definitely be one of my goals!
Anxiety is a pretty big thing for me too, but I’ve found talking over the reasons I’m worried with my mum or someone helps quite a lot 🙂 x

    • August 3, 2012 11:39 am

yes, I have to rationally think through it and realize there is NOTHING to be anxious or worried about!

  16. August 3, 2012 11:53 am

I do worry a lot, but I almost always keep a cool fascade. And I’m really good at going to sleep. I don’t think I’ve ever not been able to fall asleep from worrying. I just remind myself that I did what I could that day, I need my rest to perform the next day, and I’ll tackle the problem with a fresh perspective in the morning 🙂

  17. August 3, 2012 12:55 pm

YAY for going to HLS! That rocks!! You don’t have anything to worry about, you’re awesome, and you love life<—that's all there is to it 🙂

I am a worrier SOME of the time, most of the time I just snap out of it (b/c my husband is NOT a worryer–so that helps). I am definitely outgoing (an extrovert) but a huge part of me is a homebody and likes to just chill at home. I need a nice mix of both for sure!

Longtime reader but new blogger here! LOVE your blog.
To answer your Q’s…I am a BIG TIME worrier. Big time. It’s definitely something I’m working on. I also have my nights where I like going out and being social, but I have to balance them with “me” time or else I go insane.
    Have fun sailing! Sounds awesome.

    • August 5, 2012 8:40 am

Haha yea, I definitely crave me time after going out with friends a lot! Thanks for reading, Angela! I’ll have to check out your blog!

  19. August 3, 2012 2:56 pm

I’ve definitely got issues with worrying! I’ll keep myself awake at night with anxiety sometimes, it’s pretty bad.

I’m a big “me-time” person. One of my goals this year was to get out a bit more and see my friends more often, and i think I’ve made a lot of progress with that. I still need a lot of time to myself for sure though.

    • August 5, 2012 8:42 am

Hopefully you’ll get better about worrying at night, I used to be like that too but somehow managed to lower my anxiety to where I sleep much better!

  20. August 3, 2012 6:25 pm

Lovingggg these goals Katie! Do not be worried about HLS, because I am your roommate (one of them I mean!) and obviously we are going to have a flippen rockin time 🙂 Yes I enjoy abbreviating words unnecessarily haha. Having said that, I worry quite often too, but I continue to get myself out there and prove that nothing is as bad as it seems! It can be so hard sometimes though, that is for sure

  21. August 3, 2012 9:13 pm

Don’t stress about the job search! It’s a fun process, I promise. You’ll find your niche. And you can always pick up another internship if you can’t nail your perfect job right away. I get anxious, but I’m not really a worrier. My anxiety only peaks when things are out of my control…like when I have a swarm of termite-like flying bugs in my living room one morning…or when I get to work and the AC is dead in late July in South Carolina. Personally, I tend to be pretty laid back, as long as things don’t get all wompy and chaotic. I’m more of a homebody (especially because I have a home that needs to be maintained). I’m totally independent, but I love that. “Me” time is the jam. I wait for the invite to go out, even then, it’s 50/50 if I follow through. I’ve become lazy in my mid-late-20s. I’m 26, but inside, I’m so much older. I’m done with the bar scene, but I’m not quite in the married with kids group. It makes things difficult when half of my friends are still wild and crazy, rockin’ it til last call, and the other half are married with babies.

    • August 5, 2012 8:43 am

I’m definitely independent too, and I like to call myself an “old lady”. I think we’re in the same place!

  22. August 3, 2012 9:41 pm

That’s great you accomplished the goals you set out for yourself! I usually have a mental list of goals at the beginning of the month but I need to start keeping tabs on them so I am more accountable. The funny thing is I had kind of an opposite goal of you, I wanted to be “less social” in a way and spend more time doing things solo and relaxing because my May/June were crazy busy with social things. I felt kind of all over the place and wanted to take July to wind down a little and focus on myself. I also started job searching and have a couple interviews coming up 😀 good luck!!

    • August 5, 2012 8:44 am

That’s why I write it down – I forget otherwise! And having a less social goal is good too, haha a friend of mine is doing that because she spent very little time focused on herself!

  23. August 3, 2012 11:28 pm

The career hunt…oh man….I’m still on the hunt for mine! It’s probably one of the toughest decisions/choices a person has to make in life but the reward will be worth it! Don’t give up! I know I haven’t…

Have a great time at HLS. It is natural to worry sometimes. Good for you for setting big goals for yourself!

  25. August 4, 2012 1:23 am

You did such a good job on your July goals! Awesome! I like your ones for August, too. Good luck with your marathon training 🙂

  26. August 4, 2012 1:56 am

You are awesome for accomplishing all your August goals. I’m super jealous of you that you’ll be attending HLS.. I’m also jealous of all your flights. That may sound ridiculous, but I lovee flying haha.

Have a great weekend girl 🙂

  27. August 4, 2012 3:04 am

I’m so excited you’re going to HLS! Don’t worry at all! I went last year and it’s really laid back. You can attend as many or as few of the events as you want. I skipped a bunch of the sessions because I was more interested in exploring Philly with other attendees. And I can guarantee that the workout session won’t kill you; you’re training for a marathon! I bet you’ll be in better shape that almost everyone else there. 🙂

I used to worry about *everything,* but over the years that’s really subsided. Now the only thing I’m worried about is finding a job! So yeah, I completely get the “AHHHHHHHHHHHH!” at the end of this post! haha

I hope you had a blast sailing today! Happy weekend!

  28. August 4, 2012 9:20 am

They are great goals! Keep us updated 🙂

I would love to go to HLS one day.

I just finished the bar, so I just want to urge you to live it up this final year of law school… Go out, relax, generally do as little as possible because bar studying is terrible and then jobs begin. It’s your last time to be a student and your last time to have a flexible student schedule. I just wish someone has told me this last year when I was starting my third year, and I normally hate when people offer unsolicited advice but ahh I think you’re great and think it’s important to take advantage of your last year as a student!

    • August 5, 2012 8:46 am

Thanks for the advice!! I always appreciate advice! I’ll be sure to make the best of my last year on this schedule!

In case you don’t know, Boston has a paved path that goes along the Charles River. It’s broken up by some stop lights but there’s a lot of walkers, bikers, joggers out. This isn’t the best map but somewhere to start Good luck getting those 16 miles in!
