Insurgent Book Review

July 31, 2012

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a great start to your week! I took yesterday off as a sick day and I’m so glad I did! I would have been a mess if I tried to make it to work and sit there and focus all day. I needed the extra time to just relax and recoup – mentally and physically!

One of the things I did yesterday was start reading Sisterhood Everlasting. It’s a follow up on the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, which I was a HUGE fan of, so I was excited to see the story continued!

Another book I read recently? Insurgent! It’s the second book in a 3-book series. The first was Divergent,  but the third won’t be coming out for a YEAR! Ahhhhh! I’m dying! Haha let’s hope I can forget about it until next Fall!

I really enjoyed this book! It was super thick but I managed to work my way through it pretty quickly! I was always excited for my commute to and from work because it was the biggest chunk of time during the day that I could read.

The story is based in a dystopic world, meaning it’s different from the one we all live in. What I love about the story is that the city they live in is actual a future version of Chicago. The author, Veronica Roth (who is only 22 by the way!!) lives here in Chicago and since I know the city it’s really cool to recognize certain things in the book.

In the story, the city is split up into “factions”, which are groups of people with similar personality characteristics, and they each live together and play a function in the city as a whole. When a person reaches the age of 16 they take a test to determine which faction they are best suited for and can then decide to stay where they grew up, or move to a different faction. Confusing, huh? Haha it makes sense when you read the story.

The second book starts out at a point where all the factions are at war, which is difficult for Tris, the main character, who switched factions when she turned 16. The book follows her and she deals with the war, loss of family and friends, and learning to trust her instincts rather than only doing what others tell her, even if she loves and trusts them.

It’s an exciting story and definitely one that’s hard to put down! And of course it ended with a complete cliff-hanger! Fall 2013 cannot come soon enough! Oh wait, I have to find a job by then… it can take it’s time.

Another thing I did yesterday? Go through old music! I was going through all the music (lol well as much as I could get through) to try and find good marathon training songs. I like bringing back old songs, ones that I got tired of from listening to too much! While looking through them I came across a few gems. Remember these?

In My Pocket by Mandy Moore

Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani

Stars are Blind by Paris Hilton (AAAHHHHH yes I bought that song… shame. In my defense, I can’t sing so I like to sing along to people who also can’t sing…)

MMMBop by Hanson (I had their cassette tape… that’s how old this is)

L.O.V.E. by Ashlee Simpson (another one I could sing along to)

Genie in a Bottle by Christina Aguilera

Do you prefer reading series, or single novels?

What’s a great throw-back song you listen to?

You are on a reading spree and I love it. I have to start reading more because I have never read any of these books, this one looks good!

    • July 31, 2012 7:47 am

haha my spree is being induced by getting books off my “on hold” list at the library and having to read them before their due date!

I didn’t like Sisterhood Everlasting (I thought it was too dark), but I know some people love it. Hopefully you’ll like it. I have heard great things about Divergent. One of my friends has tried to convince me to read it, but I’m in a reading funk right now. I have 8 books on my night stand that I need to finish before I can purchase any more.*

Well, it’s definitely not a happy go lucky story, but it’s certainly keeping my attention! I think I’m so attached to the characters that I love any continuation of their stories! When I’m in a reading funk I just read a super easy, fun book and that tends to help get me back in the mood!

Haha don’t worry, I bought stars are blind too 🙂 I haven’t read insurgent yet, but I loved Divergent, so it’s on my list!

Haha good to know I’m not the only one who supported Paris Hilton’s foray into the musical world.

I can’t wait to read insurgent, thanks for the review! It actually just came available off my hold list at the library in las Vegas, but we have since moved to Hawaii, so now I will have to figure out how to get on the waitlist here :). I guess if the third book doesn’t come out til fall 2013, then I don’t have to rush!

I couldn’t get into Insurgent (loved Divergent) but I’m going to try to read it again on my roadtrip from New Hampshire to Texas. Sometimes it just takes me reading something for a solid hour to get into it!

    • July 31, 2012 3:25 pm

I had a hard time getting right into it too, I think it’s because I’d forgotten a lot of the characters’ names and where it left off from Divergent. Lol kinda wish I’d re-read Divergent first!

When I was packing up my room at my parent’s house before I moved to Chicago, I rediscovered my Dream Street CD from sixth grade and decided it DEFINITELY needed to be put on my iTunes. Haha such quality music!

I’ve had Divergent on my shelf for months. I need to read it. I just can’t seem to find time anymore! I really need to buckle now and read!

Love the old songs, I am pretty sure I have all of those songs on CDs somewhere too! Another great one: Dirty Pop by Nsync. I think I need to go through my old music now for new running music…

I prefer series but I am reading an amazing book right now called The Night Circus that isn’t a series. Loving it! I always have a ton of books on hold with the library and I just added, Sisterhood Everlasting, Divergent and Wild 🙂

I have been known to start listening to have 90’s moments where I download a ton of 90’s songs on my mp3 player.

I totally prefer series–and it looks like we like the same books! 🙂

You should read Graceling, I think you’d really enjoy it (it is a 3-book series too. Hah).

YAY for sick days & feeling better!

I’ve been wanting to read this SO BAD! I loved Divergent. Haven’t been able to find it anywhere, though (if Target counts as “anywhere” lol). Should probably just suck it up and order it for my Kindle.

I love that you’ve been reading so much lately. Your book reviews are so helpful and I’ve gotten so many amazing suggestions from you. I actually haven’t read Divergent yet but, after reading this review, I’m heading out to buy it ASAP. The series sounds so interesting!
And I looove that throwback songs! haha. Too funny.

  14. July 31, 2012 9:49 pm

So we apparently have the same tastes in books, I LOVED Divergent. Don’t even get me started on this it’s going to be a year until the next book… ugh.
Sisterhood Everlasting was SO SO GOOD!

Insurgent sounds like a book I’d love! And I had no idea that there was a follow-up to the Traveling Pants series!? Gah, now I have to add another book to my never-ending “must-read” list. ;-p

I’m the same way with songs–I love the throwback tunes! MmmBop! takes me back to 5th grade! Love it.

Hi, Katie! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Divergent series! I finished the two books in three days. Good thing about reading from kindle is that I don’t get overwhelmed by how thick the book is. However, I don’t think it would’ve mattered..bc the read was such a page turner! If I could see any book character come to life, it’d be Tobias. I actually have a mad crush on him! He sounds so strong and mysterious..and so loyal..and he has so much pain that he carries from his childhood that I can’t help but want to hug him and love on him. Didn’t you just love the crazy flirtations that went on between the two lovers 😉
And seriously…how are we going to wait a WHOLE YEAR!! I actually liked this series more than The Hunger Games. And I’m in love with this adult dystopia genre. I’m currently reading Under the Never Skies by Veronica Rossi..I know another Veronica..but it’s really good too. Have you read it?

    • August 2, 2012 1:09 pm

Haha I totally have a crush on Tobias too! Who wouldn’t!? And no, I haven’t heard of that book, I’ll look it up!
