Thursday Thoughts

July 19, 2012

Hey everyone!!! How has your week been? Mine’s been alright, I had that boat cruise which ended up with me being in the sun waaaaay too long and then walking almost 2 miles (I thought it was  just 1) in the heat to get back to a bus to take home. That plus my 6 mile speed run in the morning and I felt awful yesterday. I ended up going home from work early because I felt so ill! This morning I woke up to thunder and lightening… So I went back to bed. Unplanned rest day = best idea ever.

But here’s a pretty picture from our cruise:

It’s been a busy week and I’ve got a busy weekend coming up, so let’s move on to some of the random things going through my brain!

1. I got to go to Costco this weekend with my cousin Allie, and I came back with what was EXACTLY on my list, nothing more! It was an epic moment.

photo 1 (16)

Almond butter, marinara sauce, frozen berries and…. Folgers! How ridiculously large is this container?!

photo 2 (15)

2. I may be nervous about the half marathon this weekend, but I have something pretty awesome to distract me…

I’m MOLLY-SITTING!!!!!! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a whole weekend of THIS FACE:

3. I FINALLY found Kit’s Organic Bars!!! I’ve been uber jealous of this lady and her kit’s organic, so I was so excited to see them at Whole Foods!

I tried almond berry, which was pretty good. I prefer the texture over a lara bar.

P.S. Barberries and Bilberries?!!?!? I had to wikipedia those…

And then, I tried the Cashew flavor… OH. MY. GOSH. Go buy it. Now. Like right now. This post will be here when you get back. Go!

It was sooooo good! It was like a dessert, like a cookie/cookie dough that is cashew flavored. A cashew butter cookie (like a peanut butter cookie). I’m living off these things.

4. This happens to me WAY TOO OFTEN here in Chicago. Basically 10 times a day. Apparently not everyone is a power-walker?!?

teenager post #5775

5. I don’t think I need to explain this one:

oh. my. god. yes please!

6. Sooooo I’ve decided to hike up a mountain. Yep. This is one of those things I’m kind of scared to do, and it would be easier just to sleep in, so I’m sharing it with everyone to make it harder to back out. I’m going to hike the back side of Pike’s Peak (13 mile round trip) when I’m in Colorado Springs for 2 days in August. Everyone at HLS, expect a very sore Katie at the Friday evening cocktail party…

7.  I learned how to sail in summer camp, went on three different week-long sailing trips, and taught sailing for a summer at another summer camp. Although I haven’t gone sailing in 5 years (it pains me…) I still consider myself a sailor. So when I saw these, I fell in love.

Nautical Rings.

8.  My thoughts are pretty much occupied with the weekend and this half marathon… so in lieu of a few more items, I have some great pinterest quotes to share:

hah.

Get your shine on.

Have you ever hiked a 14-er?! I’ll take tips!

What’s your favorite Coscto/Sam’s Club item?

slow walkers make me want to cringe. I am so sorry about the boat thing, I bet it was overheating that made you feel like crap the next day plus some dehydration. glad you saw a rest day was the best choice. I wish I had a costco card, man oh man.

    • July 19, 2012 1:35 pm

Definitely super dehydrated. And I don’t have a Costco card, I just bum off of my cousin! Haha

#4 is my life. Though even my boyfriend complains that I walk too fast sometimes. I really can’t help it! I’d really like to do a long mountain hike in NH this summer before I leave too.

  3. July 19, 2012 8:14 am

hahaha the slow walkers are an issue in Boston too. So painful! Good luck at the half marathon this weekend!

  4. July 19, 2012 8:39 am

I love that face! Molly is insanely adorable! Also, slow walkers are the worst!!

  5. July 19, 2012 8:55 am

haha i buy that massive folger’s container of coffee at costco. isn’t it huge?!?! since cody doesn’t drink coffee, it lasts me foreverrrrr.
yay!! so glad you found the kit’s organic bars! honestly i think i liked that berry almond one the best and thought the cashew one was good, but not my favorite.

  6. July 19, 2012 9:16 am

Good for you for wanting to a climb a mountain! I’ve never climbed any of the 14-ers, but I have climbed some of the 46-ers in the Adirondack’s in NY! My advice is bring LOTS of water and carb rich foods, as well as sunscreen, bug spray, band-aids and ointment, as well as moleskin. Moleskin is great for covering up blisters!

  7. July 19, 2012 9:33 am

those pull apart muffins look absolutely insane. i’m glad you got to rest – like you told me last week – listening to what your body needs is the most important thing! hope you feel better, nothing worse than a sunburn.

    • July 19, 2012 2:07 pm

Yep, skipped out on the three miler this morning and it couldn’t have been a better choice!

  8. July 19, 2012 9:47 am

I am going to have to look for those kit bars, the cashew ones sound delicious! I love anything cashew flavored. I love the huge tub of coffee too. Gotta get caffeinated 😛

  9. July 19, 2012 11:26 am

Since moving to canada (where there are no Trader Joe’s- gasp!) i have found that almond butter is massively expensive in the grocery store. Except: Costco has large jars of t for $7. Happy lady right here.

Oh, and they have great organic dog treats. (we get the gluten free ones because one of our dog’s ‘doggie friends’ has an allergy)

  10. July 19, 2012 1:26 pm

YAY for hiking Pike’s Peak! You’ve got this 🙂

LOVE Costco. I always get the huge containers of Greek yogurt, frozen berries, turkey burgers, and salsa. YUMMM!!

Love all those quotes you posted!

  11. July 19, 2012 1:29 pm

Those cinnamon muffins look delicious! Glad you enjoyed the bars as well, are they just like Larabars?

Those muffins look amazing, and I LOVE your inspirational posts! My favorite COSTCO item it the Amylu chicken sausages and lots of Chobani! 🙂

Rawr I hate being stuck behind a slow walker! I feel like you can always identify a tourist on State St. by how fast they walk haha. Needless to say, I cannot handle Michigan Ave., because no one knows how to walk fast on that road. Eesh.

    • July 19, 2012 3:54 pm

Michigan drives me insane, as does state! I worked right offstage last summer and wanted to just whack the tourists!

  14. July 19, 2012 3:11 pm

Psh. Costco is SO MUCH better than Sam’s. I used to love Sam’s. Total Sam’s Teamer. But then I was introduced to the delicious Sample Saturdays at Costco. Now Costco has my heart…and my wallet.

casual non-commenting reader here, but as I’ve climbed 9 CO 14ers and summited 7 of those (& I grew up in the flat east so I was an utter newbie; my fella’s from CO) here are my tips: 1) take it SLOW. Some people like to race. I say, slow down and enjoy the gorgeousness of the experience. 2) never miss out on a chance to pee. they will be few and far between, especially on a peak like this which will be uber busy. 3) nibble and sip – bring nutrient/carb rich foods, stuff your pockets, and nibble. Nuts, luna/lara bars, dried fruit, etc. Likewise, LOTS of water and sip sip sip sip vs. chug… chug. Probably won’t feel much like eating or drinking, so be sure you do throughout. 4) bring bandaids and tape for blisters. 5) Relax and breathe gently. Pause to catch your breath when you need to. 6) weather changes. layers, rain shell, hat and gloves for the summit where it will probably be cold. 7) SUN BLOCK. & sunglasses. & drops if you wear contact lenses, mine always get weirdly blurry up high, dry air? 8) Start early and watch the weather. When it doubt, call it a day. The mountain will be there next time. 9) Remember that you have to get back down. Don’t push past reason to get to the top, and not have enough left to safely get down again. 9) ENJOY!!! The effort, opportunity for self-reflection, and the beautiful location is always worth it, whether or not you ‘bag’ the peak. You will have an amazing time:)

Well thank you for commenting today!!! This is GREAT advice!!! Haha copy and pasting it right now! I really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out, Jen!

Sometimes unplanned rest days are exactly what the doctor ordered! I had one today too. (:
And I just finally got a Costco membership yesterday! I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I was. I definitely already stocked up on tons of berries, almond butter/peanut butter, coffee, hummus, cereal, toothpaste, etc. I was in heaven!

Oh, and I can’t wait to try the new Kit’s Organic bars! I’ve been searching everywhere but haven’t found them yet.

    • July 20, 2012 10:29 am

I found them at a whole foods in chicago, I’d been looking for weeks! and costco is pretty awesome!

  17. July 19, 2012 9:53 pm

    3. if the cashew clif bar is anything like the cashew cookie lara bar I’m sure its awesome!
    4. ughhh hate slow walkers – I walk really fast at school (and all the time) so I just don’t understand why some people just stroll everywhere. I got places to be!
    7. I love sailing too! I’m on my college’s team and I taught sailing for years. What kind of boats did you sail?

    • July 20, 2012 10:38 am

I think it’s even better than the larabar one! Lol and I’m so not good enough to be on a college team! I really don’t know if any of these are correct names (just what we called them at camp) but we sailed mostly X-boats and then had a few yinglings and sunfish, and (I had to google this) but I’m pretty sure we had an M-16 and an E scow. One of them had two centerboards, one per side. Loooooved that boat. Ahhhh now I miss sailing!!!!

Shopping at Costco and checking out with nothing more than what’s on your list is an accomplishment that should be celebrated! 😉 I don’t think I’ve ever achieved that feat. Practice makes perfect, right? Is this a legitimate excuse to hit Costco more frequently than I need to? 😉

I’ve been searching high and low for Kit’s Organic bars, but still haven’t found them. Waah. The cashew cookie sounds amazing!

And those Cinnamon Sugar Pull Apart Muffins. No words except *SWOON.* ❤

    • July 20, 2012 10:38 am

Totally a legit excuse to go to Costco more often! And I was searching for Kits for ages, I finally found them at a Whole Foods in Chicago.
