July Goals!

July 1, 2012

Hey everyone! I hope you’re all having a great weekend! I’m doing alright so far, yesterday I had my 9 mile long run and I felt so great afterwards! I miss those long runs, I need to keep them up even after training! Plus, the cold water bath afterwards is soooo much easier to handle in the summer:

Can you believe today is July 1st?!!? So crazy. Haha I feel like you’ve read that sentence on about 10 blogs today. At least. Anyway, since it’s the beginning of July I thought it would be the perfect time to recap June’s goals, and go on to July’s!

If you’re new to my blog, every month I set a few goals to try and reach that month. It’s usually pretty simple and small changes to my daily life, just to get myself to try new things or constantly try to be a better person!

June Goal Recap

1. Bring lunch 4 days a week to work. I have to give myself a pat on the back for this one. I did this every week of June, EXCEPT this past week. And that was not my fault. I had to buy lunch 3 days last week because on Tuesday I was supposed to get lunch with my mentor but she cancelled 5 minutes beforehand… so I had to go buy lunch and we re-scheduled for Wednesday. Guess what happened Wednesday? Yep. Cancelled. Had to go buy lunch. Then on Friday the interns all go to lunch together, so I bought lunch Friday too! Although it was frustrating to spend so much money, my mentor felt awful about it! She was pretty busy this week. But all in all I did good with this goal and I’m very happy about it! Most people in my office buy their lunch every day! Granted, they are getting paid…

2. GO TO SPINNING. I think we all know the answer to this one… never made it to spinning.

3. Be better about calling people.  This one I actually did! Although not amazing, I did call everyone I wanted to call, unfortunately I didn’t get ahold of some people and they never called me back and I never tried again… So I’m going to keep this one up as best I can. And yes. there’s a fantastic story behind this photo… New Orleans 2008. Best 48 hours ever.

4. Don’t let strength training fall to the wayside. BOOYAH! Definitely keeping up strength training! I’m not doing it as much or as intensely as I was before, but I’ve been doing at least 1 upper body day and 1 leg day every week, and then usually I’ll do 2 circuits a week involving strength moves with smaller weights or using body weight! So far it’s been working out pretty well! Marathon, here I come!!!

I think I did alright with my goals! Gonna be honest, totally not surprised I didn’t go to spinning. I keep thinking of going to the Tuesday or Thursday 5:45 class, but it doesn’t end until 6:45 and I usually have to leave the gym at 6:30. Those 15 min are pushing it. Buuuuut I could just make some overnight oats. Ahhh. I just need to put it on my schedule.

Anyway, no need to dwell on the past, time for my July Goals!

JULY GOALS!

1) Be more social. I’ll be honest. I don’t have a ton of friends in Chicago. Sure, I have several people I could call up or text to get together for things, like brunch, froyo, or the farmers market. However, I don’t have any close friends here. Granted, I may move in a year, but nevertheless I’ve realized I need to put a little more effort into be social. I think it’s become blatantly apparent since summer started and I don’t have to spend my weekends studying.

2) HAVE FUN at the Chicago Rock N Roll Half Marathon! I’m already nervous about this race. The longest run on our schedule before the half is 10 miles, next week. I think this is insane. I ran 12 and 13 several times before my last half. Granted, I got burnt out and injured, but still. Only 10? Ahhhh. So my goal is to calm down, trust the training plan that experts have come up with and used for their programs with hundreds off runners and just go with it. Giving up control.

3) READ MORE BOOKS! I’ve gotten pretty side-tracked on book reading lately. I think it’s because the book I’ve been reading (and finished yesterday!) was large (aka harder to carry) and the end was pretty slow to get through. But I’m done with that and hope to finish at least 3 books this month! Who’s with me!?

4) Be better about keeping my apartment clean. Seriously. You should see it. It’s like I clean it one weekend, and by the end of the week it’s an awful mess. And then I’m annoyed so I don’t clean that weekend. So then we’re at 2 weeks, horrible mess. This cycle needs to end. I need to clean up each mess I make RIGHT AFTER I make it. Okay, super lame goal, but seriously, if you were looking around my apartment right now, you’d be thinking the same thing.

So there are my goals for July! Not too tough this month, but it’s summer and I want to enjoy it!

What are some of the goals that you’re working on for yourself right now?

Anyone else ever run a half marathon after only 10 miles and do well?!

Nice goals! I am getting so excited for you and the Chicago marathon!! I’ve only ever done runs of 10 miles in preparation for half marathons, even when the plan I was following said 12. I wasn’t super fast or anything, but my legs always felt good on race day!

Even for a full, the most I did was 18 (as opposed to 20) and I don’t think it would have made any difference on race day if I had gone those extra 2 miles!

Good to know that you got up to 10 too, I’m feeling a lot better about it! And SOOOOOO excited about the marathon!

Congrats on June goals, you really knocked them out of the park especially the strength training. I need motivation for that one. The mentor thing sounds terrible! I hate when things like that happen that are so out of your control. I love your july goals especially reading,I would love to do that one more too.

    • July 1, 2012 11:52 am

I think it’s easy for me to keep up strength training since once I do it, I feel so great! And definitely try and read more too! I love getting lost in books!

My longest run in preparation for the RnR Chicago half will also be 10 miles (next weekend). It makes me very nervous but I trust the training schedule and my body to take me the full distance on race day!

    • July 1, 2012 11:52 am

mine’s next weekend too! And that’s what I’m trying to do as well: trust the plan! Clearly it has worked for a lot of people!

  4. July 1, 2012 12:05 pm

Great goals to keep in mind, I think mine should be very similar to this! My problem is keeping motivated! xo

    • July 1, 2012 1:50 pm

It’s definitely great to have little reminders around, and also scheduling things, like workouts!

I followed Hal Higdons plan before my first half and only ran ten miles and the race went really well. As long as your legs feel good on race day you’ll be fine.

Would you want to go to a spinning class with me? I live in Lakeview. I think we could get a free or discounted trial class at one of the spinning gyms in the city. I’m not an expert at spinning but I’ve taken some classes and would be happy to join you. I thought this might help you try it out and it’s always a good workout.

  6. July 1, 2012 12:22 pm

You will be fine running after only doing 10 miles just pace yourself. I did hit sort of a wall at mile 9 but if you can do 10, you can do 13.1! Just think of the last bit like running a 5k! I am trying to relax as a goal, not doing fabulous but I’m currently at a beach house snuggled up in a blanket reading blogs in the middle of the day so that doesn’t sound so bad, right? I also desperately need to write my thank you notes for graduation next week!

    • July 1, 2012 1:53 pm

I guess I’m more worried about doing it and beating my previous time, but I think as long as my legs are feeling good that day I’ll be fine! Haha and that sounds like the perfect way to relax! Congrats on graduation!!!

Yep, I’ve run a number of half marathons where my longest training run was 10. Since you’re in training for the marathon, I wouldn’t worry about getting a longer run in, though, of course you can if you want since I dont think it’d hurt anything.

Looks like you’re got some good goals to work with this month. I’m still up for getting fro yo or maybe going to a low cost/free class or something.

I was just looking at my goals from June and coming up with some for July. I did well with June and this is what July looks like:

Eat mindfully/drop a few pounds and then maintain

    Enjoy turning 30

Not melt at the half marathon (I’m doing one in the burbs the day before RnR)

    • July 1, 2012 5:32 pm

I almost signed up for that half marathon! I was debating between low cost versus big crowd. I went with RnR because I want to experience a big race before Chicago, I’ve only ever done much smaller ones! And I’m actually hosting a blogger meet up this upcoming saturday afternoon for froyo, you’re welcome to join! Just send me a text!

Great job on your June goals and good luck as you work on your July goals!
I have tried writing down goals but have not been good about keeping up with them 🙂 As a teacher, I have more time during the summer and I hoped to spend more time building friendships. Still working on that one. It is hard work 🙂

  10. July 1, 2012 6:31 pm

I love your July goals! I hope you achieve them all!

  11. July 1, 2012 7:24 pm

hahaha is the apartment goal because of what we talked about last weekend? So funny.

    • July 1, 2012 7:43 pm

haha yep. Oh by the way, went to get my free froyo today… wished you were there to join me!

  12. July 1, 2012 7:29 pm

Before my first half marathon, my longest run was only 10 miles. Adrenaline and the crowd took me the rest of the way and I felt great when I finished. Here are my July goals…

Good luck and enjoy this HOT month!

  13. July 2, 2012 1:31 am

Oh man, I need to read more books too! The thought of reading for fun after sledging my way through mounds of articles for school never sounds too uhh…fun though! Now that classes are finally finished for the summer, I have no more excuses! Hunger Games, here I come!

Congrats on hitting most of your June goals! You’ve inspired me to call a few friends that I haven’t spoken to in awhile!

    Happy Monday! xoxo

    • July 2, 2012 9:20 am

I’m glad I could help! And I agree, it’s so much easier to read in the summer when there’s no school reading to do!

  14. July 2, 2012 3:30 am

Great goals for July and I think you did awesome for June! Taking your own lunch to work can save so much cash its scary. One of my goals is to enjoy a summer festival – I just hope it doesn’t rain!

  15. July 2, 2012 1:59 pm

Sounds like some great goals, Katie! Love the phone picture, hehe!

  16. July 2, 2012 4:40 pm

This is a great list of goals, and I think you did pretty awesome with your June goals! I want to read more this summer too, I just went to Barnes and Noble the other day and picked up 3 novels! Totally in the mood to read lately. Great job with your long run and good luck at the marathon!!

    • July 3, 2012 7:07 am

Ooo enjoy your books! I’m trying to get some from the library but the waiting lists are driving me crazy!

  17. July 3, 2012 4:24 pm

Oh my goodness that lunch looks so delicious!!

One of my goals is to run 4 times a week. I’ve never been super consistent about running but I’m inspired to!

    • July 3, 2012 8:18 pm

That’s a great goal! I would run 3-4 days a week when I wasn’t training for anything, I just enjoyed it so much!
