My Life is a Zoo…

April 21, 2012

Hey everyone!!! I hope you all are pumped for the weekend! And if you are cardio queen, be sure to check out Kendal’s cross training tips for runners!

Before I show you my amazing zoo adventures, I have to share something cool with you! So, some of you who’ve been following me for a long time might remember my Huffington Post posts, where I discuss some fun articles I’ve been reading (don’t worry, they’ll be coming back). I LOVE Huffington Post because it has information about so many different topics. One great topic? Workout Music – BY JANAE!!!! I love her blog, Hungry Runner Girl, and thought it was so cool that she was featured in this article!! Congrats Janae! (P.S. one day I will come to Utah, or CA, and we will eat mounds of froyo together. It will happen.)

When things get stressful and I need a break, one of my favorite things to do is walk (or run!) through the Lincoln Park Zoo. One of the amazing things about Chicago is that we have the zoo, which is open year-round and is COMPLETELY FREE. That’s right: free. There are several entrances and you can just walk through it like it’s a park! There are also several indoor exhibits for those few cold days we get…

Thursday, when I finished my memo, I decided my brain needed a break so I headed over the zoo. Although it wasn’t as warm as it was supposed to be, it turned out to be a great walk and I saw tons of animals!

Here’s a look at my walk through the zoo:

One of the most interesting parts? They had a giant spider on a huge web without being inside any kind of container. It was juts right there! The zookeeper here is explaining that they did this because once these spiders are full grown, they can move around on their web but their body weight is too heavy for their fragile legs to support, so they can’t go anywhere else! So cool.

Some of you may not know this, but I was actually a Marine Biology major in college! I’ve always been a big animal fan all my life and I LOVE going to the zoo. It’s so calming and relaxing. I remember visiting tons of zoos whenever my family went on vacation, like in St. Louis or San Diego. I’m sure my parents remember us complaining about walking so much… Haha. But now that I’m all grown up with long legs, I hope to keep up visiting zoos and aquariums! Bailey, want to go in KC???

Are you a fan of visiting zoos?

What was one of your favorite places to visit as a child?

Yay for doing something fun/that you love then! 🙂 Did you take the photos with instagram? Me likes!

I always LOVED going to the zoo, mostly for the penguins! 🙂 Also to Cedar Point, even though I was scared of most of the rides!

that’s so neat that it’s free and open year round!! i haven’t been to a zoo in ages… i’d love to go again some time soon. the zoo here in utah is pretty lame i hear, so i’m not sure i want to spend the money for it. i’d love to go back to the san diego zoo… love that one!

Haha I remember nothing about the SD zoo (I was probably 7) other than the fact that it was supposed to be amazing! I do remember Sea World – mostly just Shamu!

I love the Lincoln Park Zoo! My first date with my boyfriend was at a concert in the zoo about 3 summers ago. I remember the stage was near the lion cages haha!

I am so glad you did this post. I can’t believe you have a free zoo option like that. I would probably go a lot too.

Up here our main zoo is Woodlawn Park, definitely NOT free. When I went to the UW if I was having a bad day though I would still take off and go. As a zoo it has changed a lot, and most of the improvements have been for the better. Even as a child I was aware that the original enclosures were depressing.

I try and go to the zoo out here maybe once a year or so? It is REALLY expensive and I think the Seattle Aquarium might actually be even more expensive.

When I was a kid, zoo days were stressful days…too much bickering. 🙂

I’m glad they changed up the zoo and improved the enclosures! And I know what you mean, I actually volunteered at the SC aquarium so I could go there for free! These things are expensive, but I guess it makes sense with how much it would cost to take care of all those animals!

I’ve been to the zoo a few times and I always enjoy going! Looking at the animals is so fun! 😀

I LOVE zoos, but haven’t been since I was in high school. The last zoo was Washington DC. I wish we had cool stuff like that here! My favorite thing as a kid was the beach and pool!

I would love to go to the KC Zoo with you! Did you know that Jane Goodall gave our new chimp exhibit the seal of approval? It’s her fav in the entire world. And our polar bear exhibit just won the silver award! (Can you tell that I’m a big zoo fan myself?)
And your Lincoln Park photos look phenom – must visit there myself!

Wow! I had no idea. I was just there in September, but didn’t go in because I couldn’t figure out where to pay, so I just figured it was closed. Hah! I wish I had known that.
