Tips for New Bloggers

April 6, 2012

It’s FRIDAY!!!! I know many of you are able to really celebrate Friday with me because you don’t have to work today! I actually have never gotten Good Friday off, I went to a non-religious private school growing up and then my college and my law school didn’t take off for it either! So rude. Either way, I am very happy for those of you enjoying the long weekend!

I’ve gotten several e-mails asking about tips for new bloggers, so I thought today I would share some of those with you! First, however, I want to update you on one of my April goals, which was to participate in Janetha’s Adventurous April!

Today’s “adventure” isn’t exactly mind blowing. No skydiving, no traveling to a foreign country, not even a crazy new fashion statement. Today’s adventure was much simpler, but nevertheless took significant will power:

I didn’t have oats for breakfast. CRAZINESS. For breakfast I decided I was FINALLY going to try avocado on a piece of bread. I tend to avoid avocado since it’s high in calories (one of those “no no” foods back when I calorie counted) but it’s so good and healthy! So I made a piece of bread topped with avocado, tomato slices, a fried egg and some yogurt on the side.

Verdict? IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!! I was a huge fan of this combo and will definitely be making it again! Another bonus? Veggies already in before the day begins! I was proud I stepped out of my comfort zone, even though it was a little step!

Alright, enough about my breakfast! Time for some tips for new bloggers! It actually feels so weird to be writing this post, since I definitely still consider myself a new blogger! I started my blog on August 5th, 2011, which was actually exactly 8th months ago! I cannot believe I kept this up so long and I’m loving it more than ever! For those of you who just started or are considering starting a blog, the best things that have come from the blog are making friends with other bloggers and readers in my area, as well as the amazing support from readers! I read and reply to EVERY COMMENT because the fact that you read and enjoy what I write  means so much to me!

Tips for New Bloggers

  1. Write for you, write about what you want, and write when you want. Okay, technically that was 3 tips, but it all boils down to the same thing. If you aren’t enjoying writing, then people aren’t going to enjoy reading. When you enjoy what you write, your excitement and personality comes through. Don’t try and be like anyone else. It may take a while, but you’ll find your own rhythm!
  2. Don’t focus on numbers and don’t get discouraged. If you want to write a blog, you need to decide if you would keep writing it even if you knew your mom was the only one reading. If so, keep writing! Otherwise, a lack of readers and comments will upset you much more than it should. It took me months and months to get more than 3 comments on a post. Actually, it took months to get 3 comments on a post. You have to do it for yourself, and the readers will come!
  3. If you want people to read your blog, reach out! No one is going to know that your blog exists unless you tell them. Every day I tweet and update my facebook status about my blog. I actually got TONS of readers through facebook, people I hadn’t talked to in years were reading! When you tweet, be sure to tweet @ people and companies when you write about them! And most importantly – comment on other blogs!!! Don’t read blogs and comment just because you think you’ll get readers, but when you’re reading a blog you love, comment! By putting your name (with your URL attached) you’ll get curious people to check out your blog! They may not all come back, but some might love it! It’s an easy opportunity to get your name out there.
  4. Have good, large pictures. People like to read blogs where they feel like they “know” you. By including pictures from your life, this really helps readers get a better sense of who you are.
  5. Have an honest and revealing About Me page. If I go to a blog with basically nothing on the about me page, I usually stop there and close the browser. If I don’t get a sense of who you are, I don’t want to keep reading!

These are just a few tips for starting a blog, if you have any other questions, please feel free to e-mail me at! There are also several other more experienced bloggers with great tips! Two of my favorites are Peanut Butter Fingers and Carrots N Cake.

And speaking of “getting to know your blogger,” here are some adorable (yes, I’m adorable) photos my dad found on his computer!

Did everyone notice the fanny pack in the first photo? Love a good fanny pack. I had to have somewhere to carry my sunscreen and Chapstick…

Were you a fanny-pack wearer as a child?

What’s something “adventurous” you’ve done lately?

Awesome tips…. Being that my blog is only a few months old I’m still figuring things out! Love the pictures of you…. Adorable!! And yes, I most definetly owned a fanny pack, it was purple and I thought I was the coolest.

Haha I still have a fanny pack – bought it for a mixer in college! I should start wearing it running… Haha

  2. April 6, 2012 7:19 am

These are great tips! My blog is also pretty new – only about 4 months old – and it’s been such a learning process. I like your tip about reaching out. I’ve found some great blogs out there that I love by doing that.

  3. April 6, 2012 7:44 am

Thanks for posting some tips. I never owned a fanny pack but I remember my mom wearing one on many an occasion. Now I own a glorified fanny pack aka a spibelt haha and I love it!

  4. April 6, 2012 7:49 am

Good tips. How often do you write typically?

    • April 6, 2012 8:02 am

I write once a day! Sometimes I miss days though, like when I no internet while at my friend’s wedding in SC.

I think that your first tip is so important. I heard that the average blog lasts 9 months because people stop. I am less than a year into blogging as well and I have to continuously remind myself to keep writing for no one but me. Thanks for posting!

Good tips!! (note: instead of tips, I first wrote types and then tipes. what is my problem?!?!)

I LOVE avocado! My TCM actually told me to eat avocado every day – I am more than happy to oblige! 😉

This is a great post! And so important for people to realize these things when starting a blog. Hmm…something adventurous I’ve done lately? I have no idea haha…I guess I need to be a bit more adventurous 🙂

Oh goodness, those photos ARE adorable!! I remember when we were preparing to go to Disney World (I was in 4th grade) my aunt gave my sister and I matching fannypacks with our names written on them in puff paint. They were pink and purple and FABULOUS. I still remember laying it out on my bed while packing and being so anxious to use it!

Love your blogging tips, especially for a newbie like me 🙂 My favorite thing about blogging has been meeting other bloggers, so I love your reaching out tip. I’m so glad I found yours!

Enjoy your day off, Katie! This is the first time my school district has had Good Friday off (well, technically, since we’re a public school, we just have Friday off and it just so happens to be Good Friday) and I’m planning on relaxing and enjoying the sunshine!

  9. April 6, 2012 10:09 am

i’ve been eating at least a half of an avocado every day… i LOVE them! in fact, i just recently had almost that same exact “sandwich” the other day for lunch, except without the tomato. you’re right, it’s SO good!

  10. April 6, 2012 11:41 am

I totally understand the fanny pack. We redheads need to be sure to have sunscreen on us at all times.

  11. April 6, 2012 12:18 pm

Hahha I WAS A fannypack wearer!!!!! The pictures are hilarious!!

  12. April 6, 2012 1:45 pm

Thanks for the awesome tips 🙂

I never felt cool enough to be a part of the fanny pack craze as a youngster, but I do have a Roo now! Yes, that is an euphemism for “fanny pack,” but it’s a North Face product so it must be good. It’s useful for all of my adventures…

….such as sleeping in Lawrence the night before an all-staff work meeting the next morning. I don’t think I ever anticipated sleeping 45 minutes away from my apartment and shower the night before a big meeting at work, but I did that on Monday, and it worked out pretty well!

Love these tips! Even though I’ve been blogging since last June, I’m still learning… it’s definitely a process & I think no matter how long a person works at blogging, it’s always good to be reminded of the basics & learn new things, too!

  14. April 6, 2012 4:16 pm

Love your Disney photos! Is that your brother?

Thank you for the tips. I’ve only been blogging for a month and can be tough. Glad to know I’m not alone though 🙂

  15. April 6, 2012 7:04 pm

Mmmm I feel the EXACT same way about avocado! I’m definitely getting over being afraid of it now though because it is so freakin good. You should try it on a grilled cheese!! Good beginner blogging tips, too 🙂

  16. April 6, 2012 9:38 pm

    CUTE photos!!!

And awesome job steppin’ outside into adventurous April–savory breakfasts are THE best ever! I love getting veggies in at the beginning 🙂

Love your tips….being a new blogger myself, I am always looking for tips from other fellow bloggers. I have hit some moments in the few months I’ve been blogging where I have become discouraged, feeling like no one was reading and I was talking to myself. But, I have found my rhythm and realize I love to blog, even if no one else is reading. I thinking blogging is more about what it does for you and how it makes you feel. Once you feel good about yourself and what you are writing, the readers will follow!

  18. April 7, 2012 12:18 am

Eee! So glad you loved the avocado! It was one of my fear foods for *years,* but since I jumped over that hurdle, it’s become a staple in my meals. 🙂

Great tips! It took me months to get three comments on a post too. I remember being really frustrated, thinking I wasn’t posting what others wanted to read. But it wasn’t until I started posting what *I* wanted to *write* that people started reading! It’s so true–your voice and passion shine through when they’re genuine, and that’s what readers love!

Adorable photos! I was definitely a fanny pack kid. No shame. 😉

Thanks for the advice! I just started a month ago and I love blogging! (:

I’m a new blogger and love reading tips. So thank you so much! One goal of mine is to work on a “About Me” page. I’ve been avoiding it too long. Thanks again!

As much as we love to make fun of fanny packs, does anyone else remember how incredibly useful they were?

    • April 9, 2012 10:56 am

So useful!!! My parents also put emergency contact info in there in case we got lost! Back before cell phones…

  22. April 9, 2012 10:25 pm

Thank you so much for the tips. I’m guilty of lacking an “about me” page. It’s been “under construction” since I started the blog over a year ago. Even though I took an 11 month hiatus, I’ve been back at it for the past fews months so I have no excuse. Your disney pictures are so so cute. I think I am more intrigued by your fabulous sweater in the first picture than the fanny pack.
