Into the Depths of My Mind

March 23, 2012

It’s Friday!!!! You made it! Anyone have big plans this weekend? Honestly, I just started thinking about what I’m doing this weekend aaaaaand, I literally have nothing planned. How did that happen? I feel like next weekend is beyond booked up and I’m overwhelmed just thinking about it, yet this weekend I’ve got nada. Maybe this means I should get a ton of work done this weekend? Ugh that just doesn’t sound fun though, does it?

Speaking of things to do, I’m super tempted to just go see The Hunger Games alone. I don’t have much time next weekend (I’ve got my half marathon, I’m going to see Legally Blonde the Musical, I have a doctor’s appointment in the suburbs and I might have a book club meeting. Oh, and school work). We’ll see…

Anyway, can you tell there are tons of things going through my mind? My head feels so scrambled full of thoughts right now that I just can’t write a coherent post. So today’s post is going to give you a look into some of the random thoughts running through my mind, Starting with the most important:

1. Check out my new phone background. Please, feel free to be jealous.

2. I went to Argo tea to get an iced coffee with almond milk (so good!) and they had samples of a new drink called the Teana Colada. Normally I can’t have their samples because they already have regular or soy milk in them (to new readers, I can’t have gluten, soy, pasteurized milk and white sugar) but he said he could add almond milk to the sample instead! Not only was this exciting in itself, but the drink was SO GOOD. If you live in Chicago, NY, St. Louis or Boston, go try it.

3. I haven’t had popchips in AGES but I saw them at CVS when I was looking for something to oomph up my mid-day snack and I decided I wanted to try a new flavor. Parmesan garlic was pretty good! I also tried the Chipotle Lime yesterday, which was good and a little spicy! But I’m such a parmesan lover…

4. I have been obsessed with making “fries” out of all other veggies. Zucchini, mushrooms (more like chips…) and carrots. Next up is eggplant and rutabaga!

photo (8)

5. I saw this super easy recipe for frozen yogurt covered blueberries on pinterest and had to try it. I had some yogurt, I had some blueberries, why not? They turned out good, but for some reason the yogurt tasted like it had an acidic flavor? I added vanilla rather than honey, maybe that’s why? Not sure… still cool and refreshing.

6. Check out Molly’s collar. My brother and sister-in-law met in their freshman year math class at MU. They’re big Mizzou fans. So, of course, Molly is too.

photo (15)

7. Molly has also decided to completely ignore the rule that she’s not allowed on the furniture. Her excuse? She’s concentrating on trying to get whatever is inside that bone (bone marrow???) out of it. Sometimes she holds the bone in her mouth so it looks like she has a giant tooth.

photo (11)

9. Speaking of Molly, my brother and sister-in-law are taking her with them this weekend. How cruel is that? I offered to keep her and they said no. Kidnapping may occur today while they are at work… I’m sure no one in my building would notice I have a dog, right?

8. I went on a quick walk around the block yesterday morning since it was supposed to rain all day (it never did until nighttime…) and I came across the stone wall in front of a building. It was so cool! There were pieces of ceramic in the wall and little windows and a cool door. So random!

photo (31)

9. Speaking of no rain, it was cool enough (although very humid) to take my 6 mile run outside yesterday afternoon. It was an awful run. I wanted to die. My legs were so sore and I could barely convince myself to keep moving below a 10 min/mile pace. Let’s just forget that ever happened…

10. SAVED BY THE BELL IS ON NETFLIX!!!!! Please tell me you all watched this show as religiously as I did (along with Full House and Home Improvement). Now it’s on instant streaming for Netflix! So much work will be done this weekend…

Are you scared yet? Those are just a few of the many things that have been going through my mind lately. The more serious ones include:

“This race next weekend may go badly. Very badly. Running in under 1:50:59 may have been a bit crazy for my first half, especially with my lack-luster training in the past couple of weeks”

“Why am I in law school?” I hope my parents enjoy that one. “WHAT DO I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE???”

“Can I find a career that utilizes my law degree but also involves nutrition and running and exercise and does not include sitting at a desk 9-5?” Basically, I think my dream job would involve fighting childhood obesity. Someone find a job for me that will be available in 18 months. K thanks.

“If I go get Fro Yo again, will the people at the store think I’m crazy? Maybe I should find another place and switch back and forth…” I went Sunday and Tuesday… Took all my strength not to go last night too.

What are some of the things running through your mind lately? I’d love to hear! Along with any job suggestions…

    I love rutabaga fries!!

  2. March 23, 2012 8:11 am

There are tons of organizations in Chicago where you can volunteer and help (in some way or another) fight childhood obesity. I’d look into CLOCC or the Chicago Food Depository (they ALWAYS need volunteers) to start but there are soooo many nonprofits out there! I know it’s hard with school to find time to volunteer but both of those organizations are extremely rewarding and they’re both great causes.

Sounds like your legs need a break! I have no doubt you’ll complete your half marathon just maybe slower than you hoped. Running in two hours would still be a great first half time! Most importantly your legs need to be rested on race day. You’ve put in plenty of training already, much more than before my first half and I was still prepared come race day. Take it easy this week!

    • March 23, 2012 9:04 am

Thanks for the advice, Sienna! I’m hoping my legs will be well rested and feeling better for the half!

  4. March 23, 2012 8:57 am

LOVE the frozen yogurt berry idea!

  5. March 23, 2012 9:07 am

The thoughts at the end of this post basically mirror mine lately. I just try to avoid thinking about what I actually want to do with my life for the most part….but I really feel like you could somehow do things with childhood obesity with a law degree! On a more serious note- I think about the froyo thing all the time. There’s one froyo place that I REALLY like but I sometimes go to the other one just because I feel like the workers at my favorite place are totally judging the number of times we come in a week hahah.

    • March 23, 2012 9:17 am

Hahahahaha yes, froyo is much more serious than life plans. especially when froyo employees are judging us…

  6. March 23, 2012 9:14 am

    molly is SOOOO cute!!!!
i love roasting veggies and dipping them in ketchup- so much more tasty than blah steamed veggies!!

  7. March 23, 2012 9:18 am

Saved by the Bell ruled my Saturday mornings as a kid, I LOVED that show, if it’s on TV now, I’ll probably watch it, even though I’ve seen every single episode!

  8. March 23, 2012 9:39 am

Last night my husband and I were driving home. We are turning on Cannon from Fullerton and you were waiting to cross the street. I yelled out, “Hey, there is Peace love and Oats.” He he! You sure didn’t look like you had a bad run!

    • March 23, 2012 11:59 am

Oh my gosh really?!?! Was I wearing running clothes?! Omg ha was me! I wish I heard you!

      • March 23, 2012 2:31 pm

Yeah, shorts and a tee. I thought it was you. My husband was teasing me that I got “blogger” star struck.

  9. March 23, 2012 9:44 am

Love that iphone background – I don’t think mine has ever NOT been my dog 🙂 And obviously I love Molly’s new collar! Go Mizzou!!

Oh goodness I’ve had so many thoughts along those lines of “What should I do with my life?” especially in the past year. I guess we’re at that point in life, right? Don’t worry – you are obviously a very hard worker and something perfect will come your way!

  10. March 23, 2012 10:07 am

Wow. I think we might be the same person. Between Saved by the Bell and getting fro yo WAY TOO OFTEN. Oy. Good luck on the half marathon!

  11. March 23, 2012 10:11 am

You got me so excited that Saved by the Bell is on Netflix. I immediately put it in my queue! I love all those shows. I still watch full house all the time. ahh I missed those shows.
-Running through my mind lately is a lot of school stuff. I have so much to and I start a new job Monday so I have some nerves with that lol.
-I say go see the hunger games so far it!

    • March 23, 2012 12:01 pm

Ah I wish I could watch Full House! I so would if I had a TV, they should add it to netflix! Good luck at your new job, I’m sure that’s scary but so exciting!

  12. March 23, 2012 10:32 am

enjoy your down time this weekend!! sometimes i love a weekend that has absolutely nothing on the agenda. i wish i could go see the hunger games with you! 🙂

  13. March 23, 2012 10:46 am

I LOVE reading your thoughts 🙂

Those blueberries in yogurt sound sooooooo good! I’d see Hunger Games with you….but I am going tonight!! Wahoo!

  14. March 23, 2012 11:35 am

I love pop chips! I want to try rutabaga fries, as well… they sound so good!

    • March 23, 2012 12:02 pm

I just tried one with my roasted veggies for lunch (I was afraid they’d take much longer so I just added one on the tray to test it) and it was SO GOOD.

  15. March 23, 2012 1:04 pm

I’m pretty sure one of my acquaintances ran the Chicago Marathon for an organization that helps fight childhood obesity. I believe it was this one: http://www.chicagorun.org/

Those types of non-profit orgs don’t have a lot of money but I bet they still need lawyers to do stuff for them! Maybe look into non-profit law? Is there such a thing?

Also, I love random posts like this. I always forget to comment on something but, hey, not every post needs to have a cohesive theme!

Oh geez I hear you on the career thing. I’m about to graduate from my own grad program and still trying to figure out how I can really keep my love of food/fitness/inspiration writing at the forefront too…let me know when you figure it out!!

And I’ve totally been thinking of trying the yogurt-blueberry idea since I saw it on Pinterest too!!

  17. March 23, 2012 3:24 pm

I used to watch “Saved by the Bell” so often when I was younger!! That’s awesome that it’s on netflix. I’ll have to invite myself over to someone’s house who has it just to reminisce. 🙂

  18. March 23, 2012 4:30 pm

i LOVE having no weekend plans! i have none this weekend and it’s so relaxing to be able to hang and get stuff done around the house! and i’m totally loving your dog’s MIZZOU collar!!!

  19. March 23, 2012 5:56 pm

I appreciate your post and your enthusiasm to practice law and still have a life and not sit at a desk from 9-5. First and foremost, don’t stop blogging when you study for the bar exam and don’t stop blogging when you become an attorney!

I am a first year attorney and my blog is the only thing that keeps me sane – it gives me a reason to leave my desk so that I have something fun to do to blog about! And, the great thing about a law degree is that there are so many things you can do with it and you don’t have to do traditional litigation – you can do in-house work (which you can do as a first year even though some people say you can’t – you can, even in this economy). Or, there are a lot of Business Affairs positions that require a legal degree, or alternatively, there are college campuses that need attorneys and there are tons of jobs that don’t require sitting behind a desk – don’t feel tied to traditional law – it’s not worth it! 🙂

    Second, Go MIZZOU! 🙂

    • March 23, 2012 7:43 pm

I LOVE that you are a Mizzou fan, and thanks for the advice, it’s great to hear from someone on the “other side.” So far I know I don’t want to litigate, it just sounds so unappealing to me! I just need to find a “non traditional” job that fits!

Just stumbled across your blog and as soon as I saw you mention seeing Hunger Games by yourself, I knew immediately I’d have to comment! I literally just got back from going by myself and I must say I am not ashamed one bit!! It was one of the most fantastic experiences ever… Only had to find one seat for myself (pretty awesome when it was as crowded as it was tonight), didn’t have to worry about pleasing anybody else, and could get up and leave to use the restroom whenever because I was on an end seat, yay for end seats! (Just for the record, I never actually got up in the middle of the movie even though I really had to go… it was just too good to chance missing something I wanted to see!) Hope you have a great weekend, and in case my comment didn’t get my point across, you should definitely go see Hunger Games by yourself… if you want to!

    • March 24, 2012 7:58 am

I actually LOVE seeing movies alone, and I’m really tempted by this whole finding 1 seat and not having to get there freakishly early thing… Glad you enjoyed it! Ahhh I’ll have to think about it. Maybe I will just go!
