Taking Big Changes Day by Day…

Hello Everyone!

You may have noticed (or probably not…) that I’ve been using a lot of gluten-free recipes recently. I’ve been having stomach problems for over two years now, and after seeing several conventional doctors who could only diagnose me with Acid Reflux (aka heartburn…) I finally took the advice of my friend, Caroline, and went to see a holistic doctor.

She’d suggested going several times before, but I was finally pushed over the edge when I read a post by Chelsey talking about her experience with a doctor here in Chicago and how he’s helped her with similar problems.

I had my first appointment about a week and a half ago and after doing several tests, including a muscle reflex test, he told me that I am probably intolerant to several types of wheat (basically gluten), soy, white sugar and pasteurized milk.

I’m going back weekly and taking supplements, so we’ll see how it goes. But cutting these foods out of my diet is the first and most important step!

Do you have any idea how many food products have soy in them? I sure didn’t… haha. I keep finding things in my kitchen with soy products in it! At least my brother and sister-in-law are enjoying all the stuff I keep bringing them so it doesn’t go to waste…

Gluten, however, is pretty easy at home since I didn’t eat much in the first place and there are plenty of other flours I can use. What’s really going to hurt is going out to eat! When I went to Trivia Night with the Kappa Delta Alumnae last week, I had to order that salad because (after removing the croutons and asking for balsamic vinegar as a dressing) it was the only thing on the menu I could eat!

I didn’t want to share this all with you immediately because it was pretty overwhelming (and still is!) and I wanted some time to wrap my mind around it. Also, I’ve decided to just deal with this day by day. Thinking about not eating gluten or soy for the rest of my life sends me into a mental frenzy and get’s me tearing up, so I’m sticking to how I’m going to deal with it today, and this week.

 

On a lighter note, Molly has her final exam for puppy school tomorrow night!!! She’s been practicing very hard and is apparently the smartest dog in class! My brother, however, thinks she is going to fail the test for not jumping up on people… I agree. She just gets too excited!

How do you handle overwhelming news? Have you ever been to see a holistic or unconventional doctor?

If anyone out there is living gluten or soy free, I’d love any advice! P.S. did you notice I finally gave in to pinterest?

    i’m sorry about your intolerances! I think through the blogging world you will find a lot of resources on how to live gluten and soy free! Whenever I receive overwhelming news I automatically get really stressed out about the news, and other little things that wouldn’t normally stress me out..so my relief..exercise! I love going for runs when I am overwhelmed because it allows me to clear my mind and makes the run go by faster! always a win!

      I don’t think I could have handled this if it weren’t for the blogging world! I was already eating practically gluten free at home just because of recipes I’d been trying from bloggers. And you are so right, Chelcie, running makes me feel better too!

    Everything has soy! Its annoying. But ultimately better for you I’ve heard/very strongly believe haha. It gets better! I also have a lot of fruit allergies, but my allergy to berries and raspberries disappeared! People can adjust to almost anything, it just takes time!

      Haha I keep finding more and more things. I had a whey protein powder that I realized had soy and I had to toss that. Now I know why I’d started getting stomach aches after my protein smoothies…

    My best friend recently found out that she gluten intolerant and I’ve been going through the journey of redesigning her diet with her. It’s hard work! I admire your strength and perseverance and your dedication to your health! It’s so easy to get overwhelmed when you get big news like that. I thinking taking it day-by-day is the best approach you can take!

    P.S. – Molly is such an adorable puppy! 🙂 And she’s got a pretty great name. 😉

    I cried when I found out I was allergic to gluten and yeast. I mean BREAD, hello that was like a staple in my life!! But you get used to it….kind of….I mean it gets easier!

      I did the same thing, Jocelyn. I walked out of the doctor’s office, got into my brother’s car, and just started crying. It was a lot to take in! I think the soy is harder, but gluten is emotionally more difficult since it makes me think of all the things I eat with friends and family!

    I found out that I was lactose intolerant September 2010. I was so sad…depressed actually because I am such a big foodie. I learned to live without it though, and now I am blogging (or trying to blog) about my experience without those products. 🙂 Looking forward to reading more about u though!

      I’ll definitely check out your blog, Vicky! I can’t imagine no lactose, I try and cut it out for the most part but I just love yogurt!
